Aptly timed, with most of the country suffering through a heat wave, this week’s photo challenge is fresh. My interpretation of fresh was taken from The Daily Post’s prompt, “a taste or sensation – cool, sweet, invigorating, refreshing.” These past 5 or so days with the mercury rising into the upper 90′s, all I could think about were ways to refresh myself and keep cool.
One of my favorite ways to do that is with an ice cold, freshly made drink.
This challenge immediately made me think back to set of photos I took a few years ago, visiting my friend Cynthia who lived on the shore of the Connecticut sound. Nestled in cute little beach town, going up to visit her for a girls weekend was like a breath of fresh air. And after sitting in hours of commuter traffic, when I finally got out of the car, the only thing I wanted was a nice cold refreshing drink. If you know anything of the traffic on I-95 on a Friday afternoon, you surely know the sentiment.
These Mojito’s were made with freshly picked mint from Cynthia’s garden and with homemade simple syrup.
A classic Mojito

- 8 mint leaves, plus 1 mint sprig for garnish
- 2 ounces white rum
- 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
- 1 ounce Simple Syrup
- 1/2 ounce chilled club soda
In a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint leaves. Add ice and the rum, lime juice and Simple Syrup and shake well. Strain into an ice-filled collins glass, stir in the club soda and garnish with the mint sprig.
